Disaster Resilient Communities in Nepal by 2050

28th Earthquake Safety Day to be observed with the slogan:

Kathmandu: The Government of Nepal is set to observe the 28th Earthquake Safety Day on January 16 (Magh 2) in memory of the Great Earthquake of 1934 (1990 BS). This year’s slogan is: "Preparedness of all levels of government, readiness of every citizen: Earthquake-Resilient Nepal is our Shared Responsibility"

Since 1998 (2055 BS), Magh 2 has been observed annually as Earthquake Safety Day (ESD) under the coordination of the Ministry of Home Affairs to commemorate the devastating earthquake that struck Kathmandu Valley on January 15, 1934, at 2:24 PM.

During a press conference organized at the Department on Monday to provide information regarding the occasion, Er. Rabindra Bohara, Director General of the Department of Urban Development and Building Construction (DUDBC), shared that the 28th ESD would be celebrated across the country through organization of various programs. Director General Bohara mentioned that instructions have already been issued to all offices under the DUDBC to conduct various public awareness activities to mark the day.

Bohara further stated that the National Ceremony of ESD will be hosted by the Kathmandu Metropolitan City at Khula Manch. According to him, various organizations will participate in an earthquake safety rally in the Basantapur area. The rally is scheduled to start from Basantapur and pass-through Akash Bhairav, Indrachowk, Asan, and Bhotahity before reaching the main venue at Khula Manch. Following the rally, the main ceremony will be held under the chief guestship of the Prime Minister.

The event, which will see participation from various organizations working in the field of disaster risk reduction, will also feature a two-day earthquake safety exhibition. In addition to the main ceremony, various agencies, provincial governments, and local levels will organize seminars, discussions, rallies, interactions, exhibitions, competitions, blood donation drives, street dramas, and audio-visual promotional programs across the nation.

Director General Bohara emphasized that the primary cause of loss of life and property during disasters is the collapse of weak buildings or structures. He stressed that it is equally crucial to pre-assess potential post-earthquake scenarios and maintain readiness for effective and rapid search and rescue, skilled and trained rescuers, and immediate relief distribution.

On the occasion, Mr. Surya Narayan Shrestha, Executive Director of NSET, also briefed about the major programs and schedules of the major promotional activities and events to be organized as part of ESD 2082 (2026 AD).
