Teaching Skill for Professionals (TSP) Course conducted for Professors and DRR Professionals

Teaching Skill for Professionals (TSP) Course has been conducted in Lalitpur for the professors from Engineering Colleges and DRR Professionals during 7-11 August 2023. This TSP Course aims to enhance teaching skills of professionals that will assist them in improving knowledge and skills to develop, present and manage effective teaching as well as training activities.

The 20 hours TSP Course was jointly organized as a pilot course by National Society for Earthquake Technology- Nepal (NSET) and Universal Engineering and Science College (UESC) in collaboration with Earthquake Safety Solutions (ESS), Asian Disaster Reduction and Response Network (ADRRN) – Earthquake Risk Management Hub (ADRRN-ERM Hub) and International Center for Applied Sciences (ICAS). The course was run at Universal Engineering and Science College (UESC) at Chakupat, Lalitpur.

Addressing the certification program, Mr. Shiva Mangal Giri, Registrar from Nepal Engineering Council appreciated the efforts of organizers to enhance the qualities of teaching and learning environment in engineering colleges. Former Dean of Pokhara University Dr. Khem Raj Joshi shared on Nepal’s current status of studying science and technology in Nepal. NSET’s Executive Director Mr. Surya Narayan Shrestha briefly talked about the importance of the TSP course for the professionals who facilitate in learning skill and knowledge. He also committed that NSET , as a course developer, is always ready to collaborate with other organizations to improve and implement this course. Dr. Hari Darlami, President of Nepal Engineers’ Association and Mr. Tuklal Adhikari, President of SCAEF stressed importance of such efforts to enhance qualities of Nepali engineering professionals. From the Chair, Dr. Amod Mani Dixit who also chairs governing bodies of UESC, NSET and ADDRN highlighted the experiences of Training for Instructors (TFI), the instructor development course that was implemented in Nepal and the region, and how this TSP Course aims to serve the purpose of enhancing teaching skills. The event was attended by Principal and CEOs from Engineering Colleges, and also representatives from organizing partners.

Teaching Skills for Professional (TSP) Course is adapted from Training for Instructors (TFI) Course, which is the internationally recognized standard course for instructors development. Training for Instructor (TFI) Course is a 5-day residential course basically designed for the trainers to enhance skills for effectively conducting the training. There is also a huge demand for TFI courses among the professionals such as teachers, engineers, doctors, social mobilizers, researchers etc. They want guidance and improvement in their professional works through this training. Considering this, NSET has developed ‘Teaching Skill for Professional (TSP) Course’ which is a modified version of TFI with some alterations in sessions relevant to the professionals. The training duration has been reduced to 20 hours. NSET, with the vision to provide professionals who are not able to commit five full days for training, is coming up with a modified version of this training with the same essence as the original TFI.

A total of 28 participants (6 Female and 22 male) from various engineering colleges in Kathmandu Valley and few other professional organizations participated the course. Among them, 20 teachers were from UESC, 2 from Himalaya College of Engineering (HCOE), 1 from Nepal Engineering College (NEC), 1 from Nepal College of Information Technology (NCIT), 2 from ESS and 2 from NSET. A total of 13 professionals (10 from NSET and 3 from outside of NSET) served as facilitators for the training.

The course implements demonstration practice and interactive lectures methods of learning. After the training, the participants have able to enhance their communication and platform skills, skill for planning a lesson, use of communicative visuals and Audio/Visual equipment, methods of instruction, course coordination and management, testing and evaluation and empowering education in the digital age through online classes. Along with theoretical classes, the participants were also evaluated with pre and post tests and an individual presentation and group presentation.
