PEER fine-tunes SWR Pilot Course curricula
The National Society for Earthquake Technology-Nepal (NSET), in partnership with Initiative Outdoor, conducted the PEER Swift Water Rescue (SWR) Course Finalization Workshop on May 7-8, 2018, in Kurintar, Chitwan, Nepal. This workshop was a post-course activity of the SWR Regional Pilot Course also conducted during May 1-5, 2018.
During the workshop, the participants reviewed the outcomes of the pilot course, including comments and recommendations from instructors/experts and participants; aimed to further refine the curriculum syllabus and methodology in the context of South Asia; and identified the specific sections of the course materials needing further improvement.
The SWR Course Finalization core team is composed of the instructors from the SWR Pilot Course from Initiative Outdoor, Rescue 3 International, Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence, India National Disaster Response Force, Nepal Armed Police Force and NSET. NSET, as the main implementing organization for PEER Stage 4 (2014-2019) will consolidate all the outputs from the workshop, post-workshop deliverables and finalize the SWR curricula for submission to and acceptance by USAID/OFDA.
Mr. Dustin Shiau, USAID/OFDA representative, graced the workshop and encouraged the course finalization team to consider to help frame a doable, realistic strategy for not only developing and finalizing the course; but institutionalizing the SWR Course in a way that would take into consideration the international standards in SWR and what the South Asian countries or the region can realistically target based on their current and anticipated resources.
NSET has been working with Initiative Outdoor for the development and pilot testing of SWR curriculum under PEER. Initiative Outdoor’s expertise in delivering similar training for specific groups in South Asia, and with the technical assistance of Rescue 3 International, have been very valuable for the design and development of SWR Course for PEER countries.
The SWR Course is a new course under the Program for Enhancement of Emergency Response (PEER) Stage 4 (2014-2019), funded by the United States Agency for International Development through Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA). NSET is implementing PEER Stage 4 in Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Pakistan; with the participation of Afghanistan and Bhutan in recent program events. Inclusion of Maldives and Sri Lanka is also being explored in the near future.
