BALIYOGHAR: FIRST MASON TRAINING OF TRAINERS STARTED IN NUWAKOT
As a part of NSET's Baliyo Ghar program, Training for Trainers on Earthquake Resistant Building Construction has started in Nuwakot on 24th February 2016. This training is jointly organized by Department of Urban Development and Building Construction (DUDBC) Division Office Nuwakot and National Society for Earthquake Technology-Nepal (NSET) with funding support from United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Altogether 28 engineering professionals from 15 different organizations are involved in the training. This is first such training held in Nuwakot to acquaint technical professionals with skills regarding safer construction and also the tools and techniques to disseminate the knowledge to working masons.
In the introductory session, participants were asked to list out their expectations from this course. Many participants were keen to learn about the provisions in the National Building Code regarding the construction of rural houses using locally available materials. Participants also wished to know the proper techniques to help the masons understand several technical terms.
The first day of training included sessions on Earthquake Basics, Structural System and Building Proportion, Site selection and Practical sessions on casting of slabs, blocks and bricks. All participants took part in sessions enthusiastically. After the completion of hands on practical on slab and block casting, one of the participants Mr. Kiran Kuikel said, “This hands on practical exercise has helped us to know the difficulties in maintaining good construction quality. We, as engineers, must make the masons aware of the negative impacts of poor quality of construction”.
