Safer Building Construction Camp
The Kathmandu Division Office of Department of Urban Development Building Construction (DUDBC) and Imadol Village Development Committee have jointly organized two day "Safer Building Construction Camp" during July 11-12, 2014 at Imadol, Lalitpur. The main objective of the camp was to raise the awareness of Imadol VDC's general public on the importance of implementing the National Building Code. The camp targeted National Building Code implementation stakeholders within Imadol VDC. Mahendra Adarsha Higher Secondary School, United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Armed Police Force (APF), Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS), Earthquake Resistant Technology Development Consultancy Center (ERTDC), Center of Resilient Development (CORD) and National Society for Earthquake Technology-Nepal (NSET) supported the camp.
Different awareness raising programs were conducted during the camp, which was inaugurated by the Superintendant Engineer of the Kathmandu Division of DUDBC amidst the inauguration ceremony chaired by the Secretary of Imadol VDC, Mr. Mahendra Jung Sahi, on 11 July 2014. School students, with the support from Nepal Red Cross Society, conducted an earthquake response exercise at the school level. A two-day exhibition was also organized on the premises of Mahendra Adarsa Higher Seconcary School, Imadol. Various awareness materials and demonstration objects were exhibited in the five different stalls kept in the exhibition. APF, ERTDC, CORD, DUDBC and NSET set up one stall each in the exhibition.
The other attraction of the camp were the two street dramas with messages on Earthquake Risk Reduction performed by two different groups, cultural programs from the school students and national level artists residing in and around Imadol VDC, an art competition across the eight schools on earthquake risk reduction and preparedness. ERTDC also organized a five-day training program for masons on earthquake-resistant building construction technology that ended on the last day of the camp.
The closing ceremony was conducted amidst a lively cultural program, with high-level officials dancing together with national artists, including film star Monica Dahal. The Secretary of the Ministry of Urban Development, Mr. Kishor Thapa, was the chief guest of the closing ceremony chaired by Mr. Mahendra Jung Sahi, the secretary of Imadol VDC. Others present at the closing ceremony included the Director General of DUDBC, Mr. Sambhu KC, Deputy Director General of DUDBC Mr. Shiva Hari Sharma, the Chief of Kathmandu Division Office of DUDBC Superintendent Engineer Mr. Buddhi Sagar Thapa, Assistant Country Representative of UNDP Mr. Vijay Prasad Singh, Senior Divisional Engineer Mr. Sagar Krishna Joshi, Director of CORD Mr. Hari Darshan Shrestha and the Director of ERTDC Dr. Purushottam Dangol.
