Orientation to Mothers' Groups in Lamjung


Community Radio Marsyangdi 95 MHz based in Beshishahar, Lamjung organized “Orientation to Mothers' Groups on Disaster Preparedness" on April 12, 2014 at Tamu Sangrahalaya, Beshishahar, Lamjung. The idea was to familarize local women with basic understanding of risks and disaster preparedness. There were more than 70 participants from the Mothers' Groups at Beshishahar and also from various stakeholders in the districts. The program was designed as a part of series of activities set to celebrating 8th day of radio establishment.

“We have been producing and airing weekly radio program on risk reduction and also disseminating messages on disaster preparedness. This program is to conduct face-to-face interaction among community women, DRR stakeholders and mediapersons” said Meena Gurung, Director of the Radio who is also leading production of DRR program in radio. In her welcome note, Ms. Gurung stressed on the importance of making women aware of safety considerations.

Orientation presentation included hazards, risks and vulnerabilities of Lamjung district and Nepal at large and also mitigation and preparedness measures to adopt to cope with potential threats. Khadga Sen Oli from NSET facilitated the session. Relevant videos also shown. Later segment was for interactive discussion. Participanting Mothers’ Groups members shared their experiences and also reflection on this activity that they found it worth.

On the occasion, Chairperson Mr. Gam Prasad Gurung and Station Manager Ms. Prem Kumari Ghale expressed gratitudes to the community people for the continuous support and encouragement they have provided to the radio. They also felicitated facilitation team and offered Letter of Appreciation to NSET for partnering on the helping communities raise awareness on disaster resilience. The radio is producing and broadcasting DRR focused regular weekly program and also awareness messages in partnership with NSET.

Community Radio Marsyangdi 95 promotes the voice of the local community through interactive communication and is committed to giving its audience a feeling of ownership. The radio is the first community radio station in the district and was established on the 14th April 2006 (1st Baishakh 2064). It was founded by Center for Community Development and Communication (CCDC), a non-political and nonprofit social organization with the aim of supporting the socio-economic development of the district of Lamjung.
