Dhangadhi and Bhimdatta Municipalities preparing DRM Master Plan
Different stakeholders and professionals have now entered into preparing DRR Master Plan in far west municipalities of Dhangadhi and Bhimdatta/Mahendranagar. Both the municipalities, like all of Nepal, are prone to earthquakes, floods, fires and other hazards.
To more comprehensively prevent, prepare, respond to and recover from these hazards, Oxfam along with NSET is assisting the Municipality to develop a Local Disaster Risk Reduction Master Plan. In this regard a 3 day Disaster Risk Management Planning Workshop were organized by the respective municipalities in association with local NGO, OXFAM and technical support from NSET during 8-10 May,2013 and 15-17 May 2013 at Dhangadi and Bhimdutta Municipalities respectively . FAYA Nepal and NEEDS were the local NGO assisting to conduct the DRM planning workshops. The DRM Master Planning Workshops facilitated by NSET aimed at building local capacities for assessing local hazards, vulnerabilities and strengths and also preparing more workable Master Plan.
The workshop was organized with an objective to draft local disaster risk management master plan (LDRMP) for both Dhangadhi and Bhimdatta/Mahendranagar municipalities and to prepare the action plan for carrying it out at municipality level. These activities helped the Municipality and other local stakeholders better manage the risks from earthquakes and other disasters.
The Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development (MoFALD), Government of Nepal (GoN) has devised local authorities (at local governance level municipality and village development committees -VDCs) to prepare local disaster management plan for every municipality and VDC following the guideline as issued by MoFALD.
