Light Search and Rescue Training for US Embassy

National Society for Earthquake Technology - Nepal (NSET) provided the technical support for conducting one day Light Search and Rescue (LSAR - 1001) trainings to US Embassy staff upon the request from the Embassy. With a view to enhance the emergency response capacity of its staff members, the Embassy made mandatory to all staff for participating LSAR 1001 training. During June - October 2013, a total of 713 members of Embassy were trained, and now they are able to perform Light Search and Rescue Operation.

The participants are trained on basic life saving skills such as the Multiple room search; Victim extrication; Bucket brigade; and Lifting, moving and stabilizing of heavy objects which in fact is very beneficial for everyone in the community and the organization. Each training included 24 numbers of participants with the provision of one observer.

LSAR 1001 training is conceptualized by NSET to provide training on minimum search and rescue to large number of population in the country through community, organizations and individuals. This enhances the capacity to perform an initial Search and Rescue Operation in a less or no hazard areas with optimum use of locally available resources. Even in the case of mega disasters, LSAR skills help every individual to cope with disasters in a systematic way till the arrival of professional responders at the scene.

NSET has been facilitating different levels of LSAR training guided by a structured curriculum, basically derived from CSSR (Collapsed Structure Search and Rescue), a regional course under PEER (Program for Enhancement of Emergency Response) Program. There are various levels of LSAR trainings based on course duration and content delivered i.e. LSAR-1001, LSAR-1002 and LSAR-1003. LSAR trainings are now, being imparted in wide range through organizations and community with an objective to make individuals capable to cope with disasters.
