Developing the Instructors through 'Training for Instructors Course' (TFI)

NSET organized a 5 days rigorous training on Instructors development course; 'Training for Instructors (TFI)' during 8-12 July, 2013 at NSET office premise. The purpose of the TFI course was to provide the participants with a training methodology and specific personal skills that will assist them in improving their knowledge and skills to develop, present and manage effective training programs.

This was the first residential TFI course held in NSET Office premises.  There were total 26 participants from key stakeholders in DRR in Nepal - 7 from Municipalities namely Damak, Biratnagar, Dharan, Hetaunda, Bharatpur, Butwal, Siddharthanagar, 1 from District Education Office, Bhaktapur and 1 from Rural Access Program (RAP), Lalitpur and a group of 17 participants from NSET.

With the view to scale up the efforts to pursue advocacy of the importance of this course for developing efficient trainers and course managers at local, national and regional level, NSET has also initiated conducting TFI course and its adapted versions on its own and also in partnership with various agencies. This is one of this kind NSET just accomplished.

The TFI was developed in the United States of America for subject matter experts from various US government agencies.   Later on, OFDA adapted TFI to develop its instructors for its disaster management training programs.  The curriculum has been translated in Spanish, French and Portuguese; and is now used in Central and South America.  The main purpose of TFI is to train individuals to perform the tasks necessary be an effective instructor of training courses.

The entry of TFI curricula in Asia was made possible only in 1999 with the start of first phase of Program for Enhancement of Emergency Response (PEER), funded by the United States Agency for International Development Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance.  Since 2003, NSET has been implementing PEER in the 6 countries in Asia, namely, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan and the Philippines.  Through the years of PEER implementation, TFI has been recognized, used and very much appreciated by the beneficiary countries.
