PEER produces one more lot of Nepal HOPE Instructors

Nepal trains one more lot of Hospital Preparedness for Emergencies (HOPE) course instructors under the “Program for Enhancement of Emergency Response (PEER)”, funded by U.S. Agency for International Development / Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA). PEER Stage 4 (2014-2019) is being implemented by National Society for Earthquake Technology – Nepal (NSET) in Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Pakistan.
NSET in collaboration with Institute of Medicine-Tribhuvan University (IoM-TU) conducted Hospital Preparedness for Emergencies –Training for Instructors (H-TFI) Course from July 31 to August 4, 2017 in Godavari, Lalitpur. The purpose of this course is to develop qualified HOPE Course Instructors to facilitate effective and efficient delivery of HOPE courses.
The H-TFI is a 5-day course under PEER, delivered by a course coordinator, four instructors with the help of four assistant instructors using the Interactive Lecture Method of instruction that is objective based, performance oriented, tested, and highly participatory. Experienced course monitor is assigned for overall supervision of course delivery. Twenty-six participants from different hospitals, including both government and private sectors participated in the course. Out of the 26 participants, 7 were female and 19 were male. The course participants were of various professional backgrounds, namely, 18 medical doctors, 4 nurses, 2 hospital administrators, 1 pharmacist and 1 architect.
At the closing ceremony held on August 4, 2017, Mr. Santosh Gyawali, AID Development Program Specialist (Disaster Risk Reduction, Reconstruction, and Resilience Office), USAID Nepal, was very much encouraged to know the course results and has stated that we can now be more confident to step out in spreading HOPE course with these additional H-TFI graduates.
Dr. Ramesh Guragain, Deputy Executive Director of NSET urged the participants to apply the knowledge and skills acquired from the training in day-to-day life. In his message, he also emphasised the importance of HOPE course to enhance emergency response capacity of hospitals such as in terms of decision making and early set-up of triage systems, which are critical during mass casualty incidents. Dr. Guragain also congratulated all the participants for sucessfully completing the H-TFI; and expressed NSET’s appreciation for the gratifying role performed by all course instructors and participants in achieving the training objectives.
H-TFI Course Monitor Prof. Dr. Buland Thapa and Course Coordinator Prof. Dr. Pradeep Vaidya also presented their reports on H-TFI course.
Dr. Sabina Shrestha and Dr. Yogendra Amatya, representing the course participants, extended appreciation to the team of instructors, course organizers and donor for organizing the training. Overall participants’ impression highlighted the usefulness of H-TFI, with course standards which serve as role model for every other training. They also appreciated the dedication of all Instructors and organizers.
