KMC and NSET sign MOU on Urban Regeneration


National Society for Earthquake Technology-Nepal (NSET) has joined hands with Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) by signing an MOU to work together in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) in core city areas of Kathmandu valley which falls under high earthquake risk zone.The MOU signing ceremony took place at KMC office on Friday, 28th August 2015 in the presence of KMC senior staffs, media personnel and representatives from NSET. Mr. Shiva Bahadur Pradhanang, President, NSET was also present at the event when the signed MOU was exchanged between Mr. Rudra Singh Tamang, Executive Officer of KMC and Dr. Amod Mani Dixit, Executive Director, NSET.

After the MoU signing ceremony Rudra Singh Tamang expressed his appreciation to the local people who eagerly welcomed the urban regeneration pilot plan. He briefly remarked that the historical and cultural preservation and safety of the Kathmandu valley is everybody’s need today. He also extended his appreciation to the NSET team for providing the required expertise and knowledge on Earthquake Risk Reduction (ERR) and the urban regeneration project. 
While addressing the assembly, Dr. Amod Mani Dixit conveyed that NSET would proudly provide technical assistance to KMC for Urban regeneration as per reconstructions rules and regulations of the government of Nepal. He also highlighted that the role of KMC on urban regeneration is vital and that the planned ideas will materialize only through coordinated efforts of all the entities involved. Mr. Dixit said that the MOU opens the door to provide mutual professional assistance to the ongoing urban regeneration program as well as new programs for supporting DRR awareness, capacity enhancement and promoting public private partnership for ERR in Nepal.  
As listed below, both organizations share the common goal of cooperation, urban regeneration and ERR in the old city areas of the Kathmandu valley:

1) Manage urban regeneration and earthquake risk of old and vulnerable city areas of the Kathmandu valley.
2) Promote skill development for safe building practices while reconstructing new houses inside the valley.
3) Generate community awareness while focusing on earthquake risks and developing preparedness techniques.
