Earthquake Safety Day Volunteers Training
With a core mission to involve Nepalese private sector businesses into practicing Earthquake Safety Drill, Nepal Risk Reduction Consortium (NRRC) joined hands with Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS), United Nations (UN) and National Society for Earthquake Technology-Nepal (NSET) to organize a half day volunteers training program at Himalaya Hotel, Lalitpur. As part of the 17th Earthquake Safety Day approved activities, the volunteer training program was precisely designed to propagate 5 key earthquake safety day messages throughout the Nepalese private sector businesses.
Apart from informing on Earthquake preparedness family action plan, Emergency “Go Bag” for the family and Building codes for safer construction, the objective of the day was also to demonstrate/train the volunteer (mostly from UNV and NRCS) on earthquake safe behavior i.e. “Drop, Cover and Hold On” (DCH) drill exercise and walk them through the steps of earthquake response drill. About 150 volunteers actively participated in the hands-on earthquake preparedness planning exercise, “Go-Bag” demonstrations and DCH drill practices in 6 different breakout sessions run by NRCS and NSET staff members. To provide the feel of a real earthquake scenario to the volunteers, there was a brief earthquake response drill session organized towards the end of the program.
As we move towards the main day activities of 17th ESD, each participating volunteer group coordinating with their corresponding private sector focal points, will mobilize on 14th January to go to the private sector business houses to further demonstrate DCH drill exercise and practically train the staff members of the companies to do the same on the main day of 17th ESD on 16th January, 2015, 2:24 pm at their respective organizations. At the end of the program, volunteers were briefed on coordinating with their respective groups, volunteer focal points and ultimately with the private sector focal points.
