Disaster Resilient Communities in Nepal by 2050

NSET led three days of Vulnerability Capacity Assessment (VCA) training at Bhaktapur

NSET has been undertaking community based disaster risk reduction activities for many years. NSET led three days of Vulnerability Capacity Assessment (VCA) training from 26 to 28 Bhadra 2071 at Surya Binayak Resort, Bhaktapur district. Training participants came from the Katunze VDC Disaster Risk Management Committee (DRMC) of Bhaktapur. There were total of 26 participants, of which, 18 were female.

The Disaster Risk Management Committee of Katunze VDC has been working for multi-hazard risk reduction and undertaking mitigation activities at the local level. The VCA course was based on the 'Local Disaster Risk Management Guideline (LDRMP) - 2068'.  The Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development (MOFALD) published and implemented the LDRMP guideline.

NSET's approach to VCA training is effective because the participants are trained on theoretical knowledge and complete field exercises on vulnerability capacity assessment methodology and activities. The participants themselves were very eager to work on disaster risk reduction activities as soon as they returned to their communities. Together, the participants made a commitment to the important task of a vulnerability capacity assessment of the VDC, which will be completed before the Nepalese festival, Tihar of 2071.  Upon the handover of certificates at a ceremony, a chosen representative of the participants gave a speech. The speechmaker said that everyone would strive to turn over any hard stone to achieve disaster risk reduction in their community.

Guest, Bijaya Krishna Upadhyay, CBDRM division chief of NSET, chief guest, Kamala Ghimire, Planning Officer, Disaster Risk Management Department of Bhaktapur District Development Committee, and president of the ceremony, the VDC secretary received the goodwill speech on the betterment of Katunze DRMC.
