Orientation on Urban Regeneration for Bhaktapur Development Support Association


Community interest to learn about concepts to redevelop city core areas have been found to rise high. Bhaktapur Development Support Association in association with National Society for Earthquake Technology-Nepal (NSET) under the USAID/OFDA funded program 3PERM organized an Orientation Program on Urban Regeneration on August 29, 2015. The program was inducted as a part of 24th Anniversary celebration of Bhaktapur Development Support Association.

The program was organized with a purpose to discuss about the progress of the association in last one year and also to discuss the existing problems of Bhaktapur, its damage scenario, unsafe construction practices and how to move towards redeveloping a Bhaktapur city safer. The program was mainly focused on introducing the member community of association with Urban Regeneration concepts and practices.

The Program manager of 3PERM, Mr. Surya Bhakta Sangachhe presented about the current scenario in the city core area of Kathmandu valley, the damage of the old and historical settlements in that area. He also highlighted the need to rearrange the settlement to get better access roads and other lifelines for the people in the city and also increasing their economic status. Furthermore, the need for such regeneration was much more felt when he pointed out the cultural heritages and monuments are losing to encroachment, pollution, and all other outcomes of such unhealthy lifestyle. Lastly, he highlighted the similarities in traditional construction in Bhaktapur and Kathmandu. Total of around 120 (90 male and 30 female) participants actively participated in the program.
