US Congress Representatives visit Earthquake most hit areas of Sankhu, Kathmandu


A team of US Congress Representatives visited Earthquake most hit areas of Sankhu, Kathmandu on August 19, 2015. The visiting representatives walked along the streets to city core areas worst hit by Gorkha Earthquakes, witnessed the devastations and interacted with affected individuals and communities with the views to learn how US Government and people could join best in reconstruction and recovery efforts.

The team was constituted of Representative Vern Buchanan (FL), Representative David Price (NC), Representative Susan Davis (CA), Representative Adrian Smith (NE), Representative Jim McDermott (WA) and Representative Dina Titus (NV). The team was joined by Chargé d’Affaires John Carwile and also Beth Dunford, USAID Mission Director, Bill Berger, Sr. Regional Advisor, USAID Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance and Laureen Reagan, Director, Disaster Risk Reduction and Reconstruction, USAID.

As per the sources, the US Government has contributed over $60 million to earthquake relief efforts and is adjusting existing programming to ensure a robust recovery plan. USAID provided basic shelter kits to 2,000 households in Sankhu. NSET’s Urban Regeneration project will include an analysis of Sankhu’s settlement as a potential pilot area.

The visit was coordinated locally by USAID/Nepal, ACTED and NSET.
