Earthquake Memorial Meeting
On the 17th Earthquake Safety Day 2015, a national public commemoration majorly initiated by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) and Kathmandu Metropolitan City, was held beside the historical earthquake monument at Bhugol Park, New Road, Kathmandu in memory of those who lost their lives during the earthquakes of 1934, 1988, 2011 and others. The day definitely gives us a nudge to remember the past earthquake catastrophes as well as to take an oath to prepare for the future ones.
Honorable Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Mr. Bam Dev Gautam (President of 17th Earthquake Safety Day Committee) along with other high level officials from the government of Nepal, distinguished personalities from the government, non-government & diplomatic missions, security personnel, professionals & activists of disaster risk reduction, and people from the community extended heartfelt tributes to the past earthquake victims.
Addressing the ceremony, Honorable Mr. Gautam emphasized that sooner or later a massive earthquake is inevitable so people along with government and all the concerned parties should be aware of consequences of the risks and be prepared to save lives, property and infrastructures. One minute of silence was observed to pay tribute to the victims of the past earthquake events. Speaking at the event, Mr. Dhan Bahadur Shrestha, Chief and Executive Officer, Kathmandu Metropolitan City stressed that the event like this should be organized more often to raise public awareness and inform people more frequently to be prepared of disasters such as a massive earthquake.
