Australian Delegates in Earthquake Walk in Patan


(Nov 27, 2014) Members of Australian delegation to 18th SAARC Summit managed additional time to walk through world heritage site of Patan Durbar Square to nearby settlements along narrow streets, courtyards and underpasses to witness the life with risk perspectives. Senator Hon. Mr Brett Mason, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Head of the Delegation and team members joined in Earthquake Walk conducted by NSET in the city core area of historical city of Patan, Lalitpur.

HE Glenn White, Australian Ambassador to Nepal also joined in the walk. Also the participants walked together were Nepal Government Officials from Department of Education, Australian volunteers working in Nepal and Australian diplomatic staff.

The purpose of such Earthquake Walk that NSET conducts is to help feel the earthquake risk of Kathmandu Valley through guided walk along the streets in a core urban area and observe existing seismic vulnerability and its build up, as well as the existing capacities and resources in Kathmandu valley communities. This type of walk is expected to assist in understanding the need and possibilities of reducing earthquake risk in Kathmandu Valley.

Mr. Surya Narayan Shreshtha, Deputy Executive Director from NSET and team facilitated the walk. Route of Earthquake Walk was: Start at Patan Durbar Square, Lalitpur, - walk through Momadu street – Deu Baha – a labyrinth of underpasses and courtyards – and end at Bu-Baha.

The visitors next headed toward Tri Padma School, Pulchowk to learn preparedness efforts implemented in the school. The team observed the retrofitted block of the school building, Mr. Jhappar Singh Vishokarma, Sr. Divisional Engineer, Department of Education briefed on retrofit works done. Teachers and students also shared their experiences and regular activities for enhancing life saving knowledge and skills in the school.
