Disaster Resilient Communities in Nepal by 2050

Students’ Summit 2014 concludes with Pokhara Declaration


Students’ Summit on Earthquake Safety -2014 concluded with Pokhara Declaration. Participating students have committed to contribute in spreading the theoretical and practical knowledge, skills and methods of disaster and earthquake safety that they learned from the Students’ Summit – 2014, to their schools and communities, and also committed to actively engage in efforts to reduce potential disaster losses.

This year’s Summit focused in thematic discussion the subjects of Disability and DRR, Climate Change Adaptation and Environment protection.

The Declaration states:

“We, 70 students of 60 schools from 30 districts of Nepal and 5 students from Maiko High School, Japan, express our commitment to spread the theoretical and practical knowledge, skills and methods of disaster and earthquake safety that we learned from the Students’ Summit – 2014, to our schools and communities, and also commit henceforth to actively engage in efforts to reduce potential disaster losses.

We all express our gratitude to the Summit organizers, our teachers and schools, for giving us such wonderful opportunities to learn, understand and exchange our knowledge and experiences on Disability and Disaster Risk Reduction, Climate Change Adaptation and Environment protection.”

The main purpose of this event has remained to exchange knowledge, ideas and information of earthquake safety and also safety from all types of disasters amongst students from Nepal, Japan and other countries and learn from each other. The participants shared on School Safety initiatives taking place locally, took part in simulation drills on emergency response and also visited Armala region of Kaski district that has been terribly impacted with frequent Sinkhole disasters since nearly a year back. Students and teachers while during this community excursion interacted with local people on their experiences and current situation. Participants took part in various group activities, creative works, cultural programs and friendly football match also.

The Summit was organized by Department of Education in association with UNICEF, Plan International, World Vision, Save the Children, Nepal Red Cross Society, Mercy Corps, World Education, Handicap International, USAID, Maiko High School Japan and NSET. Altogether 120 participants including students and teachers from 60 schools from 30 districts of Nepal and 7 students and teachers from Maiko High School, Kobe, Japan participated in 3-day long residential program while more 300 local students had participated in Awareness Rally. This Summit is the 9th edition of this sequel.
