NSET
has been awarded with the 2001 United Nations Sasakawa Award for Disaster
Reduction for which it has received a Certificate of Merit in appreciation
for its outstanding contribution to disaster reduction, thereby furthering
the goals of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR).
Executive director of NSET, Mr. Amod Mani Dixit, received the award on
10th October, on the anniversary of the United Nations Sasakawa Award
for Disaster Reduction in Geneva of Switzerland. The society was awarded
for its excellent works in the field of disaster reduction in Nepal and
for building global culture of prevention by the Sasakawa Award Jury.
Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Nabin Bahadur Shrestha
was also present on the occasion.
An international Jury, composed by experts from different continents,
voted in a private meeting, on the basis of well-defined criteria, to
identify and select the Laureate of the UN Sasakawa Award for Disaster
Reduction. Since 1998, Certificates of Distinction and Certificates of
Merit have been created to reward valuable contributions to disaster.
The United Nations Sasakawa Award for Disaster Reduction is presented
annually on the occasion of the International Day for Disaster Reduction,
every second Wednesday of October for rewarding individuals and institutions
from around the world who contributed, through innovative practices and
outstanding initiatives, to reducing the risk and vulnerabilities of communities
to natural hazards!
