Community Based Disaster Management Program in Kathmandu Valley
NSET has been implementing the project: Community Based Disaster Management Program in Kathmandu Valley, with the financial support of Oxfam GB, Nepal. The program is being implemented in the selected 5 wards (6, 8, 12, 18, 20) of Lalitpur Sub-Metropolitan City in close collaboration with the Lalitpur Sub Metropolitan City (LSMC). The main goal of the project is to enhance the disaster safety of selected communities through awareness campaigns, trainings and institutionalization of the process in the local governance system for the sustainability of such initiatives. The overall objective of the project is the formation of ward level disaster risk management committee (WDMC) in selected five wards of Lalitpur Sub-Metropolitan City and the capacity enhancement of WDMC and volunteers to design and implement disaster risk reduction and preparedness activities.

To meet its objectives various activities have been carried out so far. Such as the;

Consultation meetings with Municipal Authority:

Series of informal discussion and meetings were conducted prior to the induction of the project.
Project Induction Meeting:
  Project induction meeting was held on 5th April, 2007. This meeting was held in Lalitpur Sub-Metropolitan City. The meeting was actively participated by Municipal Authorities, Municipal Officials, Ward Secretaries, representative of political parties and other stakeholders.
Formation of Ward Level Disaster Management Committes DMC (through Ward Assembly):
Under this activity, Ward Level Disaster Management Committees were formed after the extensive discussions among the participants (represented by community members, neighborhoods, tole sudhar samiti members, guthi members, club members, community based organization members, ward secretaries, LSMC members etc) in each of the five selected wards. An orientation presentation was made before the formation of the Committee.
Disaster Management Training:
  A seven-day Disaster Management Training for Community was held during 13 - 19 May, 2007 in Lalitpur (Staff College). The training was jointly organized by Lalitpur Sub-Metropolitan City (LSMC) and NSET under the project CBDMP-K. Twenty-eight volunteers representing the five different wards and municipality participated in the training.
Vulnerability and Capacity Assessment (VCA) Trainings/Workshop:
  After the successful completion of Disaster Management Training, 3 days VCA training cum workshop was held under the project. This training was designed to the same volunteers who participated the seven days training on Disaster Management. The training was conducted from 30 th May - 1st June, 2007 in the Staff College, Lalitpur.
Vulnerability and Capacity Assessment (VCA) Field Study:
  Following the VCA Training, an extensive field study on VCA methodology and exercise for community volunteers was conducted from 6 - 12 June 2007.
