Earthquake Risk Assessment and Shelter Response Planning for Kathmandu, Nepal (together with Maputo, Mozambique) within the program Risk Mapping for Shelter Response is a joint project of UN Habitat which is being supported by UNDP/BCPR, IFRC and ProVention Consortium and is being implemented by the National Society for Earthquake Technology – Nepal (NSET) as a technical consultant. The program is under the Global Emergency Shelter Cluster in the UN/IASC context; and also a component of the Global Risk Identification Programme (GRIP) of the UNDP/BCPR. The goal of the programme is to improve capacity to predict and address post-disaster shelter recovery needs and shelter planning.

A workshop ‘Shelter Response Strategy for Earthquake Disasters for Kathmandu Valley’ as one of the project activities was held on 12 November, 2008 at Hotel Himalaya, Kupandole, Lalitpur. The workshop was organized jointly by Department of Urban Development and Building Construction (DUDBC) and National Society for Earthquake Technology (NSET), Nepal. The workshop aimed to inform all the stakeholders about the project and to have their involvement right from the beginning. The main objective of the workshop was to identify the main issues and prioritize them with corresponding solutions in developing the shelter response strategy.

The workshop attended by 34 participants from various organizations representing the government, UN and donor agencies, I /NGOs, municipalities, DDCs and the community basically followed a focus group discussion (FGD) and presentation from each group followed by interaction for further clarification to build a consensus on the raised issues on three phases of shelter response.
