NSET celebrates 16th Anniversary!

Bhookampa Pravidhi Rashtriya Samaj - Nepal भूकम्प प्रविधि राष्ट्रिय समाज - नेपाल or the National Society for Earthquake Technology – Nepal (NSET) celebrates its 16th Anniversary today  in a gala event organized in its office premises at designated institutional area of Bhainsepati Awas Chhetra, Lalitpur. Amid a gracious presence of invitees among from NSET’s partners, well wishers & community people; together-with NSET Founders, Board Members & Office Staffs, President of NSET Mr. Shiva Bahadur Pradhanang officially dedicated newly built building facilities of Community Earthquake Learning Center (CELC) to the Nation. In his historical note, Mr. Pradhanang declared CELC as an autonomous and financially self sustained public institution to operate under the management of NSET. On the auspicious occasion, General Secretary and Executive Director of NSET briefed about the various features of the Center. CELC has been envisioned to serve as a Centre of Excellence in general for Disaster Risk Management and in particular for Earthquake Risk Management in Nepal. It will facilitate practical researches in specific problem areas and provide physical facilities for earthquake disaster awareness and education for specific target groups, such as children, artisans. It will have a museum for transferring the lessons learned from past earthquakes to the current and future generations. The building structure is envisioned to serve as a model of earthquake resistant construction, use of various forms of alternative energy like solar/wind energy for water heating and wind energy, back-up power for some equipment, and environment friendly and energy efficient building. Nearly 200 invitees including representatives from government offices, diplomatic missions, Academic institutions, NGOs, INGOs, CBOs, Consulting firms, Funding Agencies, and other many civic sectors observed the newly built facilities.

NSET was founded by a meeting of professionals on June 18, 1993 with the vision of establishing "Earthquake Safe Communities in Nepal by 2020". In memory of the day of NSET establishment, NSET affiliates are celebrating the 18th June as NSET day annually with the view to renew their spirit, vigor and commitments towards achieving NSET Vision, Mission and Goals for the cause of ensuring earthquake safe communities. This year's program also included the unveiling of NSET decade book ‘Safer Society and Annual Report 2008’ along with June issue of NSET Newsletter. General, DUDBC, Mr. Vijaya Singh, Assistant Resident Representative – UNDP, Mr. Badan Lal Nyachho, Director- Multi Disciplinary Consultants Pvt. Ltd, Mr. Ramesh K. Sharma, Former Chairman Nepal Red Cross, Mr. Prayag R. Suwal, Former Minister and member of school management committee, Vidyodaya Primary School and Mr. Keshab Man Amatya, Director Nepal Consult jointly released the publications. Safer Society is an aperture to peer what NSET aims to pay its efforts and has been paying since more than a decade to foster the advancement of science and practice of earthquake engineering & technology for mitigating the earthquake risk and increasing the seismic safety, to enhance professionalism, professional engineering and scientific ethics and to further the objectives of the International Association for Earthquake Engineering as applicable to Nepal. Safer Society is published as a composition of NSET journeys. Safer Society is thus a self-assessment of NSET activities or it’s the way of looking-self-in-mirror so that forthcoming activities and strategies could be more accurately designed towards meeting targeted goals. Similarly, NSET Newsletter covers the latest updates and information mainly on major activities of NSET within last six months. It aims to disseminate the knowledge and information on disaster risk reductions and to enhance the capacities of people for earthquake safety.  

The program was followed by a Reception Party. Later in the evening, families of NSET Founders, Board members and Staffs also joined the occasion participating in the various entertaining and fun events which concluded with a family dinner program.
