Shake Table Demonstration

Government of Nepal, Department of Urban Development and Building Construction (DUDBC), UNDP Nepal, USAID and NSET jointly organized the Shake Table Demonstration on the 18th of January this year on the occasion of 14th Earthquake Safety Day. The Shake Table demonstration has been one of the attractions of the Earthquake Safety Exhibition since last 14 years. Two small identical building models made up of the same construction material were placed on a table. One of the models is built with the normal construction practice and the other one incorporating seismic resistant components. Both the models are vibrated simultaneously on the vibrating table. It is then step-by-step observed how building models behave or respond to simulated vibration which can be compared with sort of earthquake shaking in real case. In due course of the vibration what it normally seems is the normal building starts to fail while the building with earthquake resistant components withstands the vibrations without any damage. The general public were explained about the damages and the reason behind them. The explanation also covers the effectiveness of each earthquake resistant components and the way they are incorporated. The public is hence made convinced on the effectiveness of the earthquake resistant components in the building. The program was covered by national level media specially radios and Television Channels. Sagarmatha Television is broadcasting semi-LIVE program from the venue of Jawalakhel Sports Ground.
