Earthquake Safety Day National Meeting

 
 

Rt. Honorable Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai inaugurated the National Meeting of 14th Earthquake Safety Day 2011 amidst a large public gathering at Jawalakhel, Lalitpur. The meeting was preceded by a mass Earthquake Awareness Rally that walked along inner streets of Patan city. Addressing on the occasion, Prime Minister Dr. Bhattarai stressed on the high need of raising public awareness on minimizing the risk of natural calamities. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Mr. Bijaykumar Gachhadar from the Chair committed on behalf of Government of Nepal on institutional capacity building on earthquake safety promotion.

On the occasion, Ms. Shoko Noda, Country Director, UNDP mentioned that September 18 earthquake was the lesson to put the DRR agenda forward. Acting Home Secretary Mr. Bhola Prasad Siwakoti put forward the government commitments toward making disaster resilient communities in Nepal. Mr. Amod Mani Dixit from NSET presented some of key information in regard to continuous progress and achievements in DRR in our national arena. Chief Executive Officer of Lalitpur Sub-Metropolitan City Mr. Arjun Kumar Thapa had extended his welcome notes while Director General of DUDBC Mr. Ashok Nath Upreti submitted vote of thanks.

"Duck Cover and Hold" National Drill

“Duck Cover and Hold” has been accepted worldwide as the first step to be taken by every individual during an earthquake to be safer from physical injury and possible death. Nationwide exercise of this individual safety was initiated since the 10th Earthquake Safety Day, 2008. This year also the nationwide drill was conducted with the help of Radio Nepal. The exercise was done at 14:24 for one minute to represent the time of 1934 Great Earthquake. Everyone present in the meeting starting from the Chief Guest, Honorable Prime Minister, Dr. Baburam Bhattrai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Mr. Bijaykumar Gachhadar, other dignitaries on the dais including each and every individual in the audience performed this drill. One demonstration was done before the audience from the dais so that everybody could perform it in the right way. The “Duck Cover and Hold” exercise performed in the National meeting was covered by the daily news papers in the next day which showed Honorable Prime Minister along with other dignitaries performing the exercise.
 
Earthquake Safety Exhibition
 

An Earthquake Safety Exhibition was organized to disseminate information regarding earthquake risk reduction measures among the public.

Just after concluding National Meeting of 14th Earthquake Safety Day held in Jawalakhel on January 16, 2012; Right Honorable Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai inaugurated “Earthquake Safety Exhibition” being organized in adjacent location, The Sports Ground, Jawalakhel. The distinguished guests also observed the stalls placed there by various governments, non-government and DRR related agencies.

The Exhibition has remained integral component of Earthquake Safety Day celebration since the very beginning. The Exhibition ran for four days from 16 – 19 January 2012. This platform facilitated the process of information, knowledge and ideas dissemination and/or sharing in regard to ERM/DRM efforts among the stakeholders and commoner people. Main contents were to demonstrating earthquake safer construction technologies, knowledge and skills required for earthquake safety and initiatives for earthquake risk reduction by different agencies. It also includes: Full Scale Model Demonstration of earthquake resistant components in a building, Demonstration of Shake Table Test with 1:10 scale building models with and without earthquake-resistant elements showing how buildings damage during earthquakes, Street Drama on Earthquake Safety, Demonstration of Fire Drills, First Aid, Search and Rescue etc.
