The 12th edition of Earthquake Safety Day has been celebrated nationwide with series of gala events during January 16, 2010 and around. Government of Nepal had decided in 1999 to observe this day annually in commemoration of the most devastating tremor that quaked on 15th of January 1934 (i.e. 2nd Magh 1990 as per Bikram Sambat calendar) in Nepal-Bihar region. Preparatory meeting of Earthquake Safety Day National Committee held on December 15, 2009 under chairmanship of Honorable Minister Mr. Bhim Bahadur Rawal, Ministry of Home Affairs has affirmed national programs of this celebration.
Management sub-committee coordinated by Lalitpur Sub-Metropolitan City and Publicity Sub-committee coordinated by DUDBC had been formulated including stakeholders comprising different authorities & institutions. As the member secretary of National Committee and also two sub-committees, NSET worked together-with various stakeholders for all the preparation works to compose the events exuberantly purposeful. The main slogan for this year’s celebration was conceptualized by the meeting of Earthquake Safety Day National Committee held on December 15, 2009 under chairmanship of Honorable Minister Mr. Bhim Bahadur Rawal, Ministry of Home Affairs and spelled as:
“Enhance Community Safety, Reduce Earthquake Risks
Construct Safe Schools, Hospitals and the Settlements”
On 16th January 2010, main day programs of 12th Earthquake Safety Day celebration held at different parts. Rt. Honorable Prime Minister Mr. Madhav Kumar Nepal inaugurated National Meeting of 12th Earthquake Safety Day 2010 amongst the large public gathering at Lalit Mandap, Jawalakhel, locally hosted by Lalitpur Sub-Metropolitan City. The mass was converged through Earthquake Awareness Rally that walked along inner cities of Patan region. In his noteworthy address, Prime Minister stressed the need of and asserted the commitments from the side of Nepal Government to enhancing institutional capacities, strengthening relevant policy instruments and promoting collaborative efforts to achieve the desired level of safety. The ceremony was chaired by Home Minister Mr. Bhim Bahadur Rawal and addressed by distinguished personalities. Prime Minister, later inaugurated Earthquake Safety Exhibition 2010 in the same place aside. Earlier, Earthquake Memorial Meeting was held at Earthquake Monument "Bhugol Park", New Road, Kathmandu. Home Minister Mr. Bhim Bahadur Rawal together-with government officials, DRR professionals and community people had paid tributes to those deceased in the past earthquakes.

Components in a Building, First Aid Demonstration, Shake Table Demonstration, National Symposium on "Experiences on Disaster Risk Reduction", Interaction Program on Radios and Televisions, Masons Training on Earthquake Resistant Building Construction, Earthquake Safe School Building Handover Program; Earthquake Safety Walkathon, District Level ESD Programs by DDRC at all 75 Districts; ESD Programs at 25 Division Offices of DUDBC, Municipality Level ESD Programs by 58 Municipalities, Sensitization Workshop on "Issue of Safer Inhabitation and Rational Implementation of NBC in Nepalese Cities" Hetauda Municipality, Franking the Commemorative Envelope to mark the 12th Earthquake Safety Day by Rt. Honorable Prime Minister; National Drill on "Duck, Cover and Hold"; National Program on Human Chain to show commitment on Earthquake Preparedness and many others. |
