Nationwide Exercise on “Duck, Cover and Hold”

Commemorating the exact time of largest earthquake of the year 1934, an exercise of safe behavior popularly known as “Duck, Cover and Hold” was performed at various places at 2:24PM with the one minute siren aired from Radio Nepal, a state-owned national broadcasting service. Earthquake Safety Day National Committee has been continuing this practice since 10th edition of the day. After concluding National Meeting, participants visited Earthquake Safety Exhibition 2010 and the time of this exercise did coincide with it. At the exhibition premises, certain groups performed the drill as the siren sounded from Radio Nepal. Subsequently, people made human chain for 5 minutes for encouraging human safety from earthquake. “Duck Cover and Hold” has been accepted worldwide as one of the most effective and safe behavior to make one safe from trembling building during large earthquakes. On the eve of the 12th ESD the Department of Education has decided to make this drill mandatory in all the public schools. The directives have been sent to all the 75 District Education Offices on this regard. The DCH drill on the schools will be carried out on the day the schools reopen after the winter vacation. The Department has also decided to fix a proper date of the annual drill on DCH suitable for all reasons of the country and put it on the education calendar from the next education year.
 

Earthquake Resistant Construction Technology Handover Program

School Earthquake Safety Program of NSET is supporting various schools to retrofit and or construct new earthquake resistant buildings. The process involves all the stake holders of the school to participate in various aspects of Earthquake Risk Reduction during the retrofit and/or new construction. Earthquake Orientation Programs, Formation of Earthquake Safety Club within the school, On the Job Training Programs for the practicing masons are some of the initiatives that NSET has been undertaking. This way the Earthquake Resistant Construction Technology is transferred to the community. At the end of each such project NSET organizes “Earthquake Resistant Construction Technology Handover Program”. One such program was organized in the premises of newly constructed Earthquake Resistant Building for Saraswati Madhyamik Vidhyalay in Thakalmath Bhaktapur on 12 January 2010 in presence of Mr. Khagaraj Baral, Director General, Department of Education as a chief guest. The program was attended by guests from various agencies, School board members, teachers, students and people from local community.
 

Training program for “Masons on Earthquake Resistant Building Construction”

A five day training program for “Masons on Earthquake Resistant Building Construction” was organized by Kathmandu Earthquake Resistant Building Construction Technician Group. National Society for Earthquake Technology- Nepal provided the required technical support. 25 practicing masons acquired the required minimum knowledge and optimum practical skill on construction of earthquake resistant buildings. The masons were described about the earthquake basics, the existing earthquake risk, preparedness and mitigation measures in the theoretical sessions. The trainees gained hands on skills through the practical sessions where they built sample models for load bearing and frame structured buildings.
 

Eloquence on “Role of Students in Earthquake Preparedness”

Community Development Forum Kirtipur (CDF) and National Institute for Disaster Survivors (NIDS) jointly organized an eloquence contest program on “Role of Students in Earthquake Preparedness” at Laboratory High School on 13 January 2010. The contest was open to all the higher secondary schools within Kathmandu District. 29 students from various schools participated in the contest. All the contestants were very much competitive in placing the students as the messengers of earthquake preparedness to their respective schools and communities. The program was chaired by Mr. Harsha Man Maharja, President, CDF and attended by Mr. Amod Mani Dixit, Executive Director, NSET;  Dr. Meen Bahadur Poudel Chhetri, President, DPNet-Nepal; Mr. Sagar Mishra, MOHA; Ms. Sharada Adhikari, NRCS;  Mr. Ram Chandra Neupane, ECO-Nepal; Mr. Surya Prasad Acharya, NSET and teachers and students from participating institutions. Ms. Sabitri Sharma, President, NIDS extended her welcome speech to all the participants and guests on the occasion.

   
 

Full Scale Model Demonstration

Two full scale models of a portion of earthquake resistant Buildings were put up so that the visitors could clearly differentiate in between the normal construction and the earthquake resistant construction techniques. One of the model was constructed for the Load Bearing Masonry Building and the other for a Reinforced Concrete Frame Structured Building. Qualified Engineers along with the trained Masons were busy in responding to the queries from the visitors regarding the technology. The reinforcement steel bars used in the model was provided free of cost as a contribution from Panchakanya Steels Private limited.  The members of Kathmandu Earthquake Resistant Building Construction Technician Group Came forward in volunteering the labor input required for the construction of the full scale models.
 

First Aid Demonstration

Nepal Red Cross Society Lalitpur District managed to perform one First Demonstration per day during the entire duration of the exhibition in front of their stall at the exhibition ground. The observers were able to know about the First Aid and various methods of providing relief to the disaster victims. The extrication, process of various types of injured victims, the First Aid Process of the fractured arm and legs, the head injury, spinal injury and bleeding were performed before a large audience.
